"Frequency of Desire" artwork by Laura Singer Anita's book is about travel, exploration, and the future in the sea that lays ahead. I had finished a unit on Greek mythology with my students not long ago and we watched Homer's Oddyssey. I was struck at the character of Calypso. In Mythology she was the daughter of the Titan Atlas, she lived on the island Ogygia. This was where Odysseus was washed ashore. Calypso fell in love with him and offered him eternal life to stay with her (which he refused, good for him - he had a wife, Penelope). They were lovers for seven years, though against his will. After those long years, Hermes was sent to Calypso to order her to set him free. She did so reluctantly, helping him make a small boat to get free of the island. Her name means Hidden or Hider. I felt saddened for her and wanted to honor her by creating the two pages "Frequency of Desire". I incorporate the lyrics from Suzanne Vega's song , Calypso " I knew that he was drowning so I brought him into me" Check out the real cicada wings on Frida's eyebrows and the stiches of wire sewn on her neckline. More suprises await when you open it up! |
